Recreational Fishing - Alabama Rig Defined

The Potomac River Fisheries Commission (PRFC) has recently received questions about a type of gear called an Alabama Rig. The PRFC defines the Alabama Rig “as an umbrella rig which may not have more than two baits or lures that have hooks.” Additional hooks can be removed to bring the rig into compliance with regulations for the main stem of the Potomac River. This is consistent with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources regulations for the Maryland tidal tributaries of the Potomac River

The Potomac River Fisheries Commission coordinates regulations with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) and the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, (DGIF) and with the other Atlantic coastal states through the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC).
